Stomach Pain Q & A
What conditions cause stomach pain?
Your stomach pain could be due to a wide variety of causes, and it might not even be related to your stomach. Some common causes of stomach pain, or abdominal pain, include:
- Gastroenteritis
- Appendicitis
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Stomach ulcers
- Pancreatitis
- Gallstones or kidney stones
- Hernia
- Stomach cancer
Not all of these conditions require surgery, but if you need surgery, Dr. Brahmbhatt can help.
What are surgical procedures for stomach pain?
If your pain is due to an issue with your stomach, Dr. Brahmbhatt can perform the procedure with expert care and attention.
Some common stomach surgeries include:
Vagotomy
A vagotomy is a surgical procedure in which your vagus nerve, which is the nerve in your stomach that controls acid production, is cut. A vagotomy is usually only performed under emergency circumstances related to a stomach ulcer.
Plyoric-Sphincter Release
Also called a pyloroplasty, during a pyloric-sphincter release, Dr. Brahmbhatt resects the lower portion of your stomach to improve the passage of food to your small intestines. This procedure is often recommended as a treatment for stomach ulcers.
Gastrectomy
A gastrectomy is the removal of your stomach, which can include part or all of your stomach. You’ll need a gastrectomy if you have stomach cancer, stomach ulcers, or severe cases of gastroparesis, which is when the stomach takes a long time to empty.
What is appendicitis?
The appendix is a small pouch located on your large intestines and can become inflamed and cause abdominal pain, referred to as appendicitis. The pain often starts around your belly button and then moves to the lower right side of your abdomen. You could also experience nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.
After an examination and special tests, which can include a blood test and diagnostic imaging, Dr. Brahmbhatt can determine if your abdominal pain is due to appendicitis. Treatment for appendicitis is surgical removal of the inflamed tissue.
What is pancreatitis?
Pancreatitis is an inflammation of your pancreas – an organ that produces hormones and digestive enzymes – that causes severe abdominal pain. Common causes of pancreatitis include:
- Gallstones
- Cystic fibrosis
- Alcoholism
- Infection
Depending on the cause of your pancreatitis, Dr. Brahmbhatt might need to perform surgery to relieve your discomfort. This could include removal of your gallbladder or the diseased portion of your pancreas.
